Beaches Shrine Club Motor Corps Unit
The Lancers Parade Unit was chartered in 1970 and consisted of 12 members with 12 mini bikes. They
participated in many parades and other functions of the community. By 1971, more "rolling stock", in
the way of dune buggies, mini cars and other various vehicles, were added to the Unit.
In 1972, The Lancer Parade Unit upgraded from the mini bikes to 350 Yamaha Motorcycles. A 3-wheel
motorcycle with a Porsche engine was added to the Unit. Noble Harry Huzham rode this awesome
machine. He thrilled the crowds at parades when he would do "wheelies", roaring down the parade
route wiwth the front wheel high in the air.
1975 was the year that the Lancer Parade Unit decided to become a competitive unit in the three Shrine
Motor Corps Associations. At that time, these associations had a rule that all vehicles in each class
of the competitions be alike and similar in size and appearance. The Lancers purchased thirteen
identical Kawasaki 400 motorcycles in maroon and black and built five identical replica 1929 Mercedes
4-wheel cars, all in maroon and white. In parade formation, this was one of the most impressive
motorized units of Morocco Temple.
In 1980, the "all alike" rule of the various Motor Corps Associations had been changed to allow
different vehicles and motorcycles to compete as long as they were in the same size and cc "class".
This ended the requirement for "all alike" vehicles. Our 1929 Mercedes replica 4-wheel cars were
becoming difficult to obtain and the Lancers voted to allow a different vehicles to join the ranks, a
replica of a 1927 Bugatti Racer.
The Lancers have participated in many F.A.S.M.C. (Florida Association Shrine Motor Corps)
Competitions, S.A.S.M.C. (Southeastern Association Shrine Motor Corps) Competitions and
I.A.S.M.C. (International Association Shrine Motor Corps) Competitions. Both the 4-wheelers in the
1501# and over class, and the motorcycles in the 400cc class, have won a lot of trophies through the
years. Many of these trophies may be seen, proudly displayed, in our Beaches Shrine Club room.
Today, both the Mercedes and Bugatti cars are hard to come by. Many of our Lancer Motor Corps
members with those fine vehicles have advanced in age and closed their tool boxes. In order to allow
us time to reorganize, gather new members, and decide on what the next generation of Lancers
vehicles will be, we inactivated the unit in December 2003.
